Latex mattresses and pillows — just how good are they?

There's much hype about natural latex rubber (and memory foam) as the panacea of sleep. Softness, with ongoing support, is the key to a good night's sleep, plus aligning the spine during the night. Latex of course is a natural product that comes from the rubber tree plantations of Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Latex Rubber is bio degradable and is a sustainable resource.

So, how do you know what density is right for you?

With latex, it has to be a pure latex mattress. A pure latex mattress is a mattress that disperses pressure evenly.

With Memory foam the test is if you keep sinking, then it's not right. If it is grossly heavy, forget it. If it takes more than five seconds for your finger pressure marks to come out, then it won't be right for you. Remember, you need support as well as comfort!

Get the right density and it will be perfect for you

Latex, as well as memory foam, are the cream of mattresses in that they spread the pressure, diffuses, and cradle the body evenly. Aligning the spine, and encouraging the natural curvature of the spine during sleep is the key.

Don't pay too much for your latex mattress!

"The more you pay, the more you get". Not so with pure latex. Some companies have got in on the act in recent times and taken advantage of the public's hunger for a good night's sleep and made fortunes by charging over the odds. You don't need to spend a lot. Just look around for latex and memory foam options in mattresses and pillows, and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Should I turn my latex mattress?

Of course, every few months. Like everything that is used a lot, there will be minimal breakdown in the cellular structure of latex, and same for memory foam, but it will be minimal. But do turn it over, and do turn it around. That way you will get untold years of comfort and support.

Do I air my latex mattress?

Even though latex (and memory foam) both contain anti-bacterial properties to discourage dust mites etc, it is always wise to air the mattress on a dry warm day with some direct sunlight, but not too much. Humid environments are not terribly good (they encourage allergens no matter what material the product is made from), so pick a day that is low humidity.

What are the health benefits of a good latex mattress?

Many. A good latex mattress will align the spine which ensures a more restful sleep. And by encouraging better posture through the night it will also be helpful in promoting clearer breathing in that the windpipe is better aligned with the spine and this means a greater volume of air entering your lungs. So this should help minimise light snoring. Good posture through the night is the key to clearer breathing, snore minimisation, and a better back.

Align the back, in comfort

Sleep deprivation through poor posture is also an issue with poorly conceived mattresses, because your body is sub consciously fighting the mattress seeking greater comfort. If the mattress is not giving under load areas, then it is creating pressure points. Both latex and memory foam have wonderful pressure-dispersing properties, and they tend to nullify pressure to buttocks and shoulders.

Latex mattresses are perfect for adjustable beds

No other mattress works as well on a tilt bed. Latex has the flexibility of being able to adjust to the bed's angle, without damage to the integrity of the mattress. Memory foam also has good flexibility qualities to suit an adjustable bed.
