There is not right or wrong way to lay while sleeping as it is determined by your personal comfort. No matter the sleeping position you will want to make sure that your spine is supported in such a way that the natural contours are encouraged. For example, if you sleep on your back, then a small pillow under your knees and a pillow under your head that is not too high or too low will help you optimize your health benefits. If your pillow is the wrong height then your neck will bend too far in one direction and cause tension and even some restriction of your airway.
There are many different things that pillows can be made out of and you can find many different articles about which is the best for resting your head and neck. One of the things that you should look for when choosing between pillow fillings is your personal preference. If you want a softer pillow that breathes well then a down or a down/feather combination pillow will probably be the best for you. If you would rather have something inexpensive and easy to care for then polyester is a good material. Memory foam is especially good for letting you have a contoured pillow that is firm and yet soft. Some material will hold heat better than others and some will require frequent fluffing so those are also things to keep in mind. Ultimately, you can find lists of the pros and cons of many different pillow materials; but, it is a good idea to try a great number of pillows before settling on the right one.
Having the right shaped pillow is important for healthy sleep because it will offer you the right support where it is needed. This does not necessarily mean that you need to get a contoured pillow though because some sleep positions will be easier with one of a different shape. For instance, if you sleep on your stomach then it is a good idea to have a thin pillow or none at all. The number of pillows that you need will also depend on how you are most likely to sleep. If you are a side sleeper then you may want to have a pillow to put between your knees to lessen strain on your hips as well as a pillow under your head and a small pillow under your waist. You could also decide to purchase one body pillow that can provide all of the same support.
